Tips for Avoiding a Yeast Infection
Yeast infections are uncomfortable. To reduce the risk of developing one in the first place, try these tips to keep things feeling better naturally.

Yeast is opportunistic, which means that it can cause an infection given the right circumstances. However, it’s also a normal part of your vaginal microbiome, so eliminating it entirely would only disturb the ecosystem and invite further problems. To keep everything in check, you might need to adjust your wardrobe and/or feminine hygiene routine.

At NY Midtown OB/GYN, with locations in Midtown, New York, New York, and Westchester, Mamaroneck, New York, our team of experienced women’s reproductive health professionals share tips on how to avoid common gynecologic conditions such as yeast infections.

What causes yeast infections

Approximately 75% of women experience yeast infections in their lifetime and it’s not uncommon to experience them throughout your life. A healthy vagina contains bacteria and yeast, but opportunistic infections can occur if things are not balanced.

Many factors play a role in your vaginal health, including:

  • Stress
  • Pregnancy
  • Poor immunity
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Uncontrolled diabetes

You might also experience a yeast infection following a round of antibiotics, which causes a decrease in Lactobacillus in the vagina. In response, the opportunistic yeast Candida albicans takes advantage of the imbalance

Preventing yeast infections

To prevent yeast infections, you need to balance your body’s microbiome. This sounds difficult, but proper hygiene and airflow go a long way. Here are some tips to help you maintain your vaginal health.

Change out of damp clothes

Moisture and heat are a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast, putting you at risk for both types of infections. Once you’ve exited the pool or finished exercising, make sure to wash and change out of your damp clothes as soon as possible.

Wear breathable underwear

You want to avoid creating a warm, wet environment. Look for underwear made of breathable materials like cotton, and try wearing looser pants and skirts on hot days.

Wipe front to back

If you don’t already wipe front to back, make it a habit now. Wiping in the opposite direction pulls fecal bacteria up into your labia, increasing your risk of UTIs and yeast infections.

Know when to visit the gynecologist

The best thing you can do for your vaginal health is to know when to visit the gynecologist. If you’ve noticed vaginal irritation or unusual discharge, don’t wait for your symptoms to worsen. Our team can diagnose the issue and suggest solutions.

Even if nothing is wrong, well-woman visits are an opportunity to receive necessary screenings and discuss your health with a professional.
